I Saw It

I saw it, face down in Maroon Sunshine
The realization hit me hard
The disgust running through my veins
Rather than the normal shot of clear liquid
Which makes me oblivious to anything around me
Whether anything mattered or not
It was just laying there bleeding and
Logged with regret and negligence
The flies and bees swarming all around this exquisite corpse
To deter me from attempting a quick grab at it
I come back in the evening to find it still there
Untouched and ignored
Carpe Diem I say as
I pounce and rescue the poor soul
From desolate deterioration
The spine reads Breakfast Of Champions
Lets clean you up and get you on my shelf

this is very good! i like the twist, at first i thought it was a person then i realized it was a book! Purpose: i believe it is the stress the importance of the book and tell those who havent read it to read it.

Post workshop question: is the 'purpose' of the poem solely to relate a moment of experience? Or do you want to highlight other issues? And what was the name of the main character in Breakfast? Wasn't he some salesman?

the main purpose that was intended was just to stress the value and importance of books in a culture that somewhat neglects them.

Dwayne Hoover was his name. He sold used cars. Also, Kilgore Trout was another main character
